Dynamics in infestation of grass weed species in German fields (2019–2025), Germany
Description
This multi-year monitoring dataset tracks the occurrence and infestation dynamics of three key grass weeds — blackgrass (Alopecurus myosuroides), barren brome (Bromus sterilis) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) — across agricultural fields in Germany. Spanning a seven-year observation window (2019–2025), it provides georeferenced records of species occurrence and a per-observation infestation level, enabling spatial-temporal analysis of weed population shifts and distribution trends over time.
Data were collected through Agris42’s national monitoring program (2019–2025) and complemented with farmer-submitted resistance samples. An approximated coordinate is included for every observation, and each point is assigned to a German federal state and Landkreis (district) via a spatial join.
Data Content
- 11,213 georeferenced grass-weed observations, every one carrying Approx. location.
- Three named species: blackgrass (ALOMY) 9,936, Italian ryegrass (LOLMU) 1,169, barren brome (BROSS) 108.
- Infestation classification per observation on a 0–5 scale: 0 no infestation, 1 single plants, 2 small patches/nests, 3 larger patches, 4 whole field infested, 5 whole field, heavy infestation.
- Observation date and harvest year for every record (time dimension for the dynamics view).
- Crop at time of observation, federal state and Landkreis per record; coverage spans 14 federal states and 131 Landkreise.
- Regional summaries per federal state available on request
Methodology
- Representative national monitoring of 1,300+ fields for occurring weed species and infestation level, 2019–2025.
- Complemented with farmer-submitted resistance samples (Bezahlproben).
- Coordinates are WGS84 field-centroid positions; each observation is assigned to its German Landkreis and federal state by spatial join. Observations falling outside Germany or lacking a field geometry are excluded.
- The time window is defined by harvest year (crop season); the recorded observation date may fall in the preceding autumn for autumn-sown crops.
Context & Typical Use Cases
- Market positioning: identify the regions where each problematic grass weed dominates, to adapt marketing & product advertisement to local problems.
- R&D prioritization: locate emerging weed problems and shifts in infestation pressure over the last years.
