Distribution of Rat's Tail Fescue (Vulpia myuros), Germany
Description
This dataset documents observed occurrences of Vulpia myuros (rat’s tail fescue, VLPMY) in German arable fields recorded through the Agris42 field-monitoring network. Vulpia myuros is an emerging grass weed increasingly encountered in arable rotations, particularly in the Rhine–Hesse region of south-west Germany.
Each observation point carries an infestation-level score and the crop grown at the time of observation. The bulk of records fall in 2022–2025, supporting near-term tracking of where the species is being found, early detection, and risk assessment for this weed.
Data Content
- 270 geo-referenced observation points (field-centroid WGS84 coordinates) across 238 distinct fields
- Infestation level per observation, 0–5 scale:
- 0 = no infestation · 1 = single plants · 2 = small patches · 3 = larger patches · 4 = whole field · 5 = whole field, heavy infestation
- Observed distribution: level 1 — 209 (77%) · level 2 — 46 (17%) · level 3 — 11 (4%) · level 5 — 2 · level 0 — 1 · level 4 — 1
- Crop type at time of observation — sugar beet 87 · winter wheat 64 · winter oilseed rape 56 · spring barley 33 · winter barley 9 (plus a long tail of minor crops)
- Year of first VLPMY detection per field (for spread-trajectory analysis)
- Federal state (Bundesland) and district (Landkreis) classification — 8 federal states, 21 districts
Methodology
- Observations recorded during standard Agris42 field visits across the monitoring network
- Infestation level assessed on the standardized 0–5 scale
- Species verification by trained agronomists
- Coordinates are field-centroid positions (WGS84), assigned to district and federal state by spatial join against the official German Landkreis boundaries – field-level
Context & Typical Use Cases
- Early warning & risk assessment: identify the regions where Vulpia myuros is currently being recorded before it becomes economically significant elsewhere.
- Product positioning: understand where control recommendations for Vulpia are most commercially relevant today (currently a Rhine–Hesse hotspot).
- Research & population sampling: locate fields with confirmed occurrences for biotest studies or resistance-screening programmes.
Extension Options
- Regional extract (e.g. Rheinland-Pfalz only)
- Combined with herbicide-sensitivity data on field-collected Vulpia myuros populations (greenhouse biotests are available for the 2025 monitoring/comparison batches — on request)
- Annual update subscription (new season monitoring data — the dataset is actively growing, 117 observations added in 2025)
