Mesosulfuron Product Comparison, ALOMY
Description
This dataset contains the results of a comparative greenhouse biotest evaluating the efficacy of multiple commercial herbicide products based on mesosulfuron-methyl against Alopecurus myosuroides (blackgrass, ALOMY) populations with varying resistance levels.
Four commercial mesosulfuron-methyl products were tested across 23 ALOMY populations selected to represent the resistance spectrum from fully sensitive to highly resistant. Every product was applied to the same populations under identical controlled conditions in a single designed trial, allowing direct product-level comparison. Product identities are anonymised as Products A–D in the dataset and disclosed on purchase.
Data Content
- 23 ALOMY populations (sensitive, partially resistant or resistant to Mesosulfuron), each tested against all four products
- 4 commercial mesosulfuron-methyl products (anonymised A–D): AtlantisFlex, Current, Niantic, Altivate
- 3 dose levels per product: 0.25×, 0.5× and 1× field dose (relative levels; raw rates withheld to preserve product anonymity)
- Efficacy scored visually as % control at DAT28 relative to the untreated control
- Resistance classification at the 1× field dose: resistant (≤50% efficacy), partially resistant (51–89%), sensitive (≥90%)
- Long (“tidy”) format: one row per population × product × dose level
Methodology
- Seeds from characterised ALOMY populations (resistance class verified by prior biotest); seed collection seasons 2023–2025
- Spray robot application under controlled greenhouse conditions (GEP-certified), trial applied in the 2025–2026 season
- Each product–population–dose combination assessed with replicate readings, averaged to a single % control value
- Visual % control scored at DAT28 relative to the untreated control
Context & Typical Use Cases
- Product differentiation: identify which formulation outperforms competitors on partially resistant blackgrass under identical controlled conditions.
- Label extension: generate dose-response data to support claims against populations with reduced sensitivity.
- Stewardship programme design: identify dose thresholds that maintain efficacy on partially resistant populations and guide anti-resistance messaging.
- Mixture evaluation: baseline for comparing co-formulations and tank-mix partners on resistant blackgrass.
Extension Options
- Disclosure of product identities and raw applied rates (g ai/ha) on purchase
- Additional populations from specific resistance classes or regions
- Additional herbicide products or MoA groups (custom trial design), incl. a 2× field-dose arm
- Mechanistic follow-up (TSR/NTSR characterisation on selected populations)
- Combined with the mesosulfuron resistance map (26_A2) for regional product-performance analysis
