Cross-Species Herbicide Sensitivity Baseline, Germany (ECHCG, CHEAL & AMARE)

Description

This dataset characterises the herbicide sensitivity of three summer-annual weed species — Echinochloa crus-galli (ECHCG), Chenopodium album (CHEAL) and Amaranthus retroflexus (AMARE) — against two ALS-inhibitor herbicides (HRAC Group 2) relevant to German maize and sugar-beet cropping systems.

Field-collected populations were tested in greenhouse biotests under identical, standardised conditions, enabling a direct cross-species comparison of herbicide performance and establishing a sensitivity baseline against which future shifts can be measured. Since both herbicides were tested on all three species using the same protocol, the dataset allows for a direct comparison of the active ingredients across the target weeds.

Data Content

  • 275 field-collected populations: AMARE 34 · CHEAL 126 · ECHCG 115
  • 2 ALS-inhibitor herbicides (Foramsulfuron/Nicosulfuron), each tested at the 1× recommended field (screening) dose
  • 383 population × herbicide records (long / tidy format)
  • Visual efficacy (% control) scored at DAT28 at the 1× screening dose
  • Binary sensitivity classification: baseline vs reduced sensitivity (flag triggered when efficacy < 75% at the 1× dose)
  • Approx. location, sampling date, crop context, Landkreis and federal state per population

Methodology

  • Field-collected seeds from the Agris42 monitoring network and farmer cooperations (2017–2024)
  • Greenhouse biotests under standardised, controlled conditions (GEP-certified)
  • Spray-robot application for precise dose delivery
  • Efficacy scored visually as % control at DAT28
  • Sensitivity flag triggered when efficacy < 75% at the 1× recommended dose
  • Reference sensitive population per species included in every greenhouse run
  • Germany filter: Approx. location points spatially joined to German Landkreise; points outside Germany discarded

Context & Typical Use Cases

  • Early resistance detection: a sensitivity baseline for these three species against ALS herbicides, against which future shifts toward reduced sensitivity can be detected.
  • Cross-species benchmarking: compare herbicide efficacy across grass (ECHCG) and broadleaf (CHEAL, AMARE) species under identical conditions.
  • Product portfolio analysis: identify which active retains the broadest efficacy across the key row-crop weeds.
  • Regulatory / stewardship data: support efficacy claims and stewardship submissions for ALS herbicides in maize and sugar beet.

Extension Options

  • 0.5× dose-level efficacy and full dose-response curves (ED50 / ED90) for selected populations
  • Additional herbicide active ingredients (e.g. species-specific actives tested on CHEAL / ECHCG)
  • Additional species on request
  • 2025–2026 monitoring update once those greenhouse biotests are entered
  • Regional subset (e.g. Bavaria, NRW) or time-series subscription
