Application Timing of Pre-Emergence Herbicides, ALOMY & LOLMU

Description

This dataset examines how application timing affects the efficacy of pre-emergence herbicide products against Alopecurus myosuroides (blackgrass, ALOMY) and Lolium multiflorum (Italian ryegrass, LOLMU) under controlled greenhouse conditions.

The same biotypes were sown once and sprayed at three standardised growth stages – pre-emergence (BBCH 00, soil application), early germination (BBCH 05) and seedling emergence (BBCH 10) – to characterise the optimal early-application window. Results are derived from a designed greenhouse trial on 12 ALOMY and LOLMU biotypes, predominantly French with two German reference biotypes, each tested against 10 products at the 1× field rate.

Data Content

  • 10 pre-emergence herbicide products, each at the 1× recommended field dose (product codes and doses disclosed in the delivered file)
  • 3 application stages: BBCH 00 (soil), BBCH 05 (early germination), BBCH 10 (seedling emergence)
  • 12 biotypes: 4 ALOMY, 8 LOLMU (10 France-origin, 2 Germany-origin)
  • 330 biotype × stage × product records (long / tidy format)
  • Visual efficacy (% control) per record, with the true days-after-treatment of the rating
  • Origin country and application-stage description per biotype
  • Untreated control included per run (efficacy expressed as % control relative to untreated)

Methodology

  • Seeds from characterised ALOMY and LOLMU populations (predominantly France, plus German reference biotypes)
  • Sown in standardised substrate; grown to the target BBCH stage before treatment
  • Spray-robot application under controlled greenhouse conditions (GEP-certified)
  • Each product × timing × biotype combination tested in replicate (efficacy reads averaged)
  • BBCH stage confirmed at the time of treatment (nominal stage per application arm)
  • Efficacy scored visually as % control on a single assessment date (37–54 DAT by stage)
  • Untreated control and reference biotypes included per run

Context & Typical Use Cases

  • Label claims on timing: support product label wording on optimal application timing and growth-stage tolerance with controlled data.
  • Agronomic advice development: build timing recommendations for sales and extension teams backed by a designed greenhouse trial.
  • Product comparison: compare products on early-application performance where pre-emergence or 1-leaf application is the target market window.
  • R&D trial design: use the timing × efficacy relationships to inform follow-up field trials for registration or extension packages.

Extension Options

  • Additional products (custom trial incorporating your specific formulations)
  • Additional species (e.g. Bromus sterilis or Avena fatua)
  • Additional growth stages (BBCH 14–15 early post-emergence)
  • German-origin replication (the current trial is France-led with two German biotypes)
  • Combined with product-comparison data (26_A4) for a full MoA × timing matrix
  • Full dose-response at selected timings (ED50 / ED90 per timing window)
